What’s Your Favorite Movie?
It’s one of those typical questions that’s leaned on in moments of conversational gridlock or introductory icebreakers: “What’s your favorite movie?” We can’t help but be drawn in by the question’s revelation of personality and taste, so naturally when we at Cigar Aficionado dedicated a cover package to the movies, we wanted to know our readers’ favorites.
We sent out a poll to a random group of readers to get a feel for what you like, and it elicited some intriguing results, both expected and unexpected.
The Godfather was voted No. 1 by a landslide, taking 25.1 percent of all votes, and we can’t say we’re all that surprised. After all, our 2022 March/April issue featured a cover of Vito Corleone with the headline “The 50th Anniversary of the Greatest Film Ever Made.” The Godfather: Part II also drew votes, but didn’t fare as well, named by 1.3 percent of voters as their favorite.
The 1942 classic Casablanca has a firm hold as the second-highest vote getter, with 6.2 percent. Two films from the 1990s, Goodfellas and The Shawshank Redemption, were neck-and-neck in third and fourth place, respectively (3.1 percent and 2.6 percent). Tied in fourth place was Academy Award-winner The Sting.
Rounding out our top vote getters were several fan favorites, including Gladiator, Tombstone and the World War II epic The Longest Day. The Tom Cruise blockbuster Top Gun and the Al Pacino/Robert DeNiro film Heat also drew votes.
Interestingly, there are more movies near the top of this list that are at least 50 years old than there are films from our present century. A classic is a classic for a reason, right?
