Onyx Vintage Nicaragua Coming Next Month
For the first time in more than three years, there’s a new Onyx coming to market. Just as summer transitions to fall, the new Onyx Vintage Nicaragua will be shipping to retailers on September 25, and according to brand owner Altadis U.S.A., it’s made with a wrapper from a 2019 harvest.
The new cigar is produced in Nicaragua—using only Nicaraguan tobaccos—by A.J. Fernandez. It’s a follow-up to Onyx Bold, which was released in 2020 and was also made by Fernandez. While the upcoming brand isn’t as strong as Onyx Bold, it’s intended to be a medium to full-bodied blend.
Onyx Vintage Nicaragua comes in four sizes, all packaged in 20-count boxes: Robusto, measuring 5 inches by 50 ring gauge; Toro, at 6 by 54, and a 6-by-60 Magnum. The cigars will have suggested retail prices of $9.60, $10 and $10.75, respectively.
Launched in 2000, the Onyx Reserve brand was (and still is) made in the Dominican Republic at the Tabacalera de Garcia factory. It’s named for its dark, near-black wrapper.
Although there’s a finite amount of 2019 wrapper, this is not a limited-edition brand. Altadis says that subsequent releases of Onyx Vintage Nicaragua will be rolled using wrappers from different harvests once the 2019 stock is exhausted.
