My Favorite Cigar
Ron Perlman • Actor • Hoyo de Monterrey Double Corona
Whether as the lead man or in a supporting role, actor Ron Perlman projects a particular kind of menace that not only dominates his scenes but resonates long after the performance is over. His tank-like build and brutish scowl have made Perlman an unforgettable presence in cinema—and on television too. As Hellboy on the big screen and Clay Morrow in “Sons of Anarchy” on the little screen, his characters have become modern-day, cigar-smoking icons of sorts.
For Perlman, cigars are more than mere movie props. The 73-year-old thespian makes cigars a part of everyday life. His two favorites are big and bold: the Cuban Hoyo de Monterrey Double Corona for special occasions and the Joya de Nicaragua Antaño 1970 Gran Consul. He smokes about once a day, usually on the golf course or after a meal, but tries to avoid smoking on set “because of too many interruptions. Cigars deserve unfettered focus.” Perlman’s focus has led to a film career that’s spanned more than 40 years and a deep appreciation for fine tobacco that goes back even further. “Some people meditate,” he offers, matter-of-factly. “I smoke cigars.”
